Executive Director
Job Description
ABOUT US
The Central West End Association is a
not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is
to maintain and enhance the Central West End as a
desirable urban residential, business, and institutional
neighborhood.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director is the Chief
Administrative Officer, and is responsible for the
direct administration and operation of the Central West
End Association and its programs, under the policy
direction of the Board of Directors. The Executive
Director will be expected to build upon the existing
track record and lead the Association as it advances its
program goals in the years ahead. The position calls for
a creative leader with outstanding strategic management
and communications skills, fund raising abilities, as
well as political savvy and a bold leadership spirit.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
The candidate should be comfortable
staffing volunteer committees, working with a Board of
Directors and membership base, and juggling multiple
tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
Candidates should possess the strategic and political
savvy to strengthen and advance the organization. The
organization seeks a strong executive with a
collaborative leadership style and with diverse
nonprofit skills, a demonstrated record of successful
management and experience, a proven ability to raise
funds, high energy, tight efficiency, excellent
communication skills, entrepreneurial drive, and a
dynamic passion for the Central West End neighborhood.
The candidate should have the ability to think and act
strategically, tactically and creatively within budget
limits. Grace, patience, imagination, good judgment, and
a sense of humor are also qualities the Association
seeks in a successful candidate.
Agent of the Board
- Assesses and interprets situations and trends
regarding issues, policies, problem situations and
long range planning areas. Provides timely
input/information/recommendations for consideration
by the Board.
- Creates, updates and implements strategic plan.
- Adheres to Board policies, and implements Board
decisions appropriately, working within the Central
West End Association by-laws, policies and budgets.
- Works effectively with Board members and
committees in carrying out responsibilities.
- Informs the Board and or its committees
accurately and fully regarding programs and
operation of the Central West End Association.
Fiscal and Administrative Management
- Prepares budgets, arranges for appropriate
financial consultation, reviews statistical and
financial information and ensures adherence to
budgets.
- Prepares and submits reports and all other
materials requested or required by government
agencies, funding sources, etc.
- Identifies/locates/applies for funding sources,
continually searching for and fully exploiting
appropriate funding opportunities.
- Organizes and maintains files and records as
appropriate (for documentation, funding
requirements, grant writing, etc.)
- Oversees all aspects of agency’s risk management
activities.
Human Resources
- In partnership with the President, recruits,
hires, trains, assigns, supervises, motivates,
evaluates and terminates staff in accordance with
approved personnel policies and procedures.
Also responsible for contractual employment of
temporary personnel.
- Provides a plan for ongoing professional
development of staff.
- Prepares and provides for the preparation of the
employee payroll and protects the confidentiality of
employees and records.
- Maintains accurate records of employee
attendance, expense reports, evaluations and other
appropriate personnel information.
Outreach & Involvement
- Serves as primary spokesperson and ambassador
for the organization; works to build relationships
and coalitions within and outside the neighborhood.
- Provides leadership in both enhancing
neighborhood strengths and tackling areas of
concern;
- Raises awareness of the organization via
external communications (newsletter, email blasts,
etc.).
Membership
Recruitment/Retention/Services
- Creates and implements strategies to increase
membership.
- Ensures appropriate services/benefits are
provided to members.
- Maintains up-to-date and accurate membership
records.
Program/Initiative Management
- Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and
evaluates the total operation of
programs/initiatives.
- Prepares or assists in preparing grants,
contracts and proposals with federal, state, local
or private agencies or other funding sources.
- Identifies need for new programs/initiatives or
modification/elimination of elements of current
programs/initiatives.
- Provides written documentation related to
programs/initiatives, their effectiveness, their
growth, and other evaluative considerations.
- Ensures that programs/initiatives keep pace with
changing needs, keeps abreast of demographics and
changing environment, and incorporates new concepts
and ideas.
Marketing/Public Relations
- Participates in marketing activities, including
speaking engagements, advertising decisions,
meetings, etc., according to needs and marketing
strategy.
- Promotes mission and programs in a passionate,
positive manner to residents and businesses, the
larger community and the media. Cultivates
community support from individuals, organizations,
businesses, foundations and government agencies.
- Develops and maintains good working
relationships with a variety of appropriate
entities.
- Participates in and supports all fund-raising
activities.
- Adheres to and promotes the mission and
philosophy of the Central West End Association.
Professional Development
- Seeks opportunities to develop professionally in
both clinical and management areas.
- Participates in collaborative activities,
seminars, course work, etc., in order to keep
abreast of current theory and trends, gain exposure
to diverse methods, and continually improve job
performance through learning.
Skills and Knowledge Required:
- Knowledge of non-profit organizations and issues
unique to nonprofits.
- Knowledge of general management theory and
supervisory techniques.
- Prior experience in supervision and program
leadership.
- Ability to work within a team setting and to
interact effectively and successfully with Board
members and other donors and volunteers.
- Ability to be organized and meet deadlines.
- Ability to communicate well in oral and written
form.
- Prior experience in fundraising including
preparing proposals, grants and written reports.
- Strong interpersonal skills and leadership
qualities.
Qualifications:
- Ten years of experience in
management/administration in a non-profit setting or
equivalent.
- Bachelor’s Degree minimum.
- Strong computer, web and online communication
skills.
- Highly proficient oral and written
communications skills.
- Experience and a successful track record in
fundraising. Familiarity and established
relationship with local (STL), regional (Midwest)
and national funding sources is highly desirable.
- Experience with financial oversight and budget
responsibility is mandatory.
SALARY & BENEFITS
This is a contract position, renewable
annually. Contract terms and salary will be commensurate
with qualifications and experience. The position
requires flexibility in work hours.
