Dear
Friends & Neighbors,
June was a busy month in the CWE.
The 2008 Art Fair & Taste drew
45,000 attendees this year, despite
a nasty storm on Friday night and
scorching temperatures on Saturday
and Sunday of the event weekend.
We're looking closely at what went
well, what didn't, and how we can
improve this event in the coming
year.
Many of you have commented about the
significant decline in panhandling
in the CWE. I've noticed it, too.
The work of the St. Louis Police
Department, combined with the Real
Change campaign, appears to be
making a difference.
I know there are concerns about
recent business closings, vacant
storefronts, etc. The best thing we
can do, as residents and huge fans
of the CWE, is to frequent our
businesses OFTEN. Given current gas
prices, and the state of the economy
in general, what better way to save
money and support our local
merchants than to hang in the
neighborhood and enjoy its many
offerings.
I hope you're having a wonderful
summer. As always, please don't
hesitate to contact me if we can do
anything for you.
Tricia Roland-Hamilton,
President
Central West End Association

DINING OUT FOR REAL CHANGE
Tuesday, July 1, 2008
Gather a group of friends and
neighbors to help raise awareness
and funds for the Real Change
campaign. As mentioned in
our last newsletter, the goal of the
campaign is to discourage the random
giving of money to panhandlers,
while encouraging contributions to
local social service providers. In
August we will tally our collections
from the meters and this event and
donate them to two neighborhood
service providers.
When you dine at participating
restaurants on Tuesday, you'll
receive a
remittance
envelope for a direct contribution
to Real Change. Participating
restaurants will also donate 10% of
their proceeds from the evening to
Real Change. Come out and help us
make a difference!

2008 GLOW IN THE PARK
September 19, 2008
6:30 p.m. till Midnight
One of
St. Louis’ most exciting events is
all new for 2008 and we want you to
join the adventure. We’re taking
you right onto Central Field in
Forest Park. With no walls to bind
us, expect the unexpected.
There has never been a Glow in the
Park like this one.
It remains the best seat
for the excitement of the balloons
aglow in the moonlight. You’ll
enjoy unparalleled cuisine from
Butler’s Pantry Catering, open bar,
live music, a great auction and much
more. Have we mentioned the
excitement and adventure? We
promise you’ll be telling your
friends all about it the next day.
Learn more about the event and
sponsorship opportunities at

Marketing Committee
|
The
Marketing Committee has devoted a
lot of time and effort toward
analyzing and branding the CWE.
It’s now time to move forward with
plans to solidify the image of the
CWE, identify value for CWEA
members, and attract visitors to our
neighborhood. The Committee has
identified five priorities: 1)
Increased signage for people driving
or walking past the CWE, 2)
Discounts for residents and
neighborhood employees; 3) Attract
visitors/tourists; 4) Create “fun”,
5) Promote diverse and plentiful
dining options in the CWE. The
Committee is researching ways in
which to fund these plans. Have
you noticed the new directional
signs? Earlier this month,
directional signs went up at various
locations in the CWE, pointing the
way to the heart of the
neighborhood.
Finally, Maggie Malcom and Tracy
Czarnec are updating the CWE
Community Directory and Wayfinders
(see below) for 2009. If you have
changes/additions, please
email us.

Neighborhood Security Initiative -
Update
|
The NSI
Committee is currently reviewing
candidate resumes for the position
of Neighborhood Security
Coordinator. This individual will
take on the task of coordinating the
efforts of five of the CWE Special
Business Districts with those of the
7th and 9th police districts,
Washington University Medical Center
and BJC security, the neighborhood
guides and supplemental security
resources. The goal is to establish
a more comprehensive approach to
providing for our safety and
security and we’ve made tremendous
headway.
Our committee is made up of
neighborhood volunteers, as is the
case with the participating SBD’s
(whose members are residents
appointed by the Mayor). We’ve been
meeting together for more than a
year now and have shared our
activities/plans regularly at our
monthly forums. The NSI has been on
our monthly agenda at these public
forums since last fall. The program
is described on our website and was
featured in the WEW in November and
on KMOV in May. You may also find
information about the NSI on our
website.
The June Security Forum featured
updates from Captains Caruso (9th)
and Moran (7th). Crime in the CWE
is down significantly from this time
last year, particularly in the area
of panhandling.
